We offer competitive rates on upgrades or replacements of:
An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device which is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults. For example, if you cut through the cable when mowing the lawn and accidentally touched the exposed live wires or a faulty appliance overheats causing electric current to flow to earth. Over half of the homes in the UK don’t have an RCD installed putting the occupants at unnecessary risk from electrical accidents.
If your fusebox has a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a mixture of fuses it is likely that it dates back to before the 1960s and will need to be replaced.
You may need to upgrade as the old common fuse box is outdated and has now been replaced with 17th Edition consumer units, they were named fuse board due to the fact that they are installed with fuse wire for each individual circuit melting when exposed to excessive current.
New technology has developed and new safety devices have been manufactured. These new boards have been created with a much higher form of protection from electrocution and cables overheating preventing electrical fires.
It’s important that you know where your fusebox is in case you ever need to turn the electricity off in an emergency. Your fuse board usually contains three things used to control and distribute electricity around your home.
They are 'The main switch' the 'Fuses' and/or circuit breakers; and Residual Current Devices. Our knowledgeable trained engineers can show you the following important information.
A) Main Switch – this allows you to turn off the electricity supply to your home. You might have more than one mains switch, for example if your home has electric storage heaters. In this case you may have a separate fusebox.
B) Residual Current Devices (RCD) these are switches that trip a circuit under dangerous conditions, and instantly disconnect the electricity.
C) Circuit Breakers – these are automatic protection devices in the fusebox that switch off a circuit if they detect a fault. They are similar in size to fuses, but give more precise protection. When they ‘trip’, you can simply reset the switch. Our team are highly skilled in these tasks and are able to replace your old fuse boards / consumer units with a modern 17th Edition consumer unit with minimal disruption at a time which is most convenient for yourself.
Inspection and testing is crucial in residential and commercial properties, all installations suffer from deterioration of some form. Current legislation says that properties should be inspected and tested every 5 years for commercial premises and 10 years for domestic premises.
Most Insurance companies require your property to have a current satisfactory certificate or report. The law requires electrical equipment to be maintained to prevent danger. The type and frequency of user checks, inspections needed will depend on the equipment, the environment in which it is used and the results of the previous checks.
SJ South East is experienced in fault finding and qualified in issuing your property with the correct certifications adhering to all current legislations.
If you are a business the Electricity at Work Regulations requires you maintain all electrical systems. This includes the testing of the fixed wiring of an installation as well as Portable Appliance Testing.
